And so the “off” season begins…

I hope everyone is enjoying the beginning of the “off” season, although it generally just means the seasoned horses look like wild ponies you wouldn’t pay $100 for, while they grow out manes and slowly try to grow back clipped bodies, and the young ones come in for the next step in their education. I think being involved with horses and polocrosse is a long cycle that just never ends! And before we know it (and to scare you all a little!) the 2010 season will be just around the corner…

Upcoming Events

AGM: The AGM has been booked in for Friday 25th September at the Moss Vale Services Club. Dinner for those who are interested will be at 6.00pm in the main bistro and the meeting will commence at 7.30pm. This is your opportunity to take on a position within the executive and committee of the Club so that it runs the way you want it to. There will be a number of positions that will become vacant for the 2010 season so check out the AGM notice to see what you would like to be involved in. Please note that the meeting is a “dry” meeting meaning that you are welcome to bring a drink/s in with you when the meeting starts, but you will be unable to get another until the meeting finishes. Please respect this.

Presentation/Fun Day: Sunday 15th November has been booked for the presentation/fun day. This year for something a little different we have booked Sylvan Glen in Penrose. Here we will be able to play tennis and golf for those who are keen for some social exercise. The day will start at 10pm (for those who want to play golf), followed by lunch and the presentation and conclude at 3pm. Further details will follow soon.

Trophies: For those who were awarded trophies for the 2008 season, please clean your trophies and return to Ann ASAP as they will need to be engraved with the 2009 winners prior to the presentation day. Ann can be contacted on 02 48410 400 to discuss delivery of these trophies.

NSW Zone Championships at Young

New Zealand Club Exchange

A very exciting possibility has come our way… Alina Gilpin has been corresponding with a gentleman from a New Zealand polocrosse club about the chances of Burradoo members and this NZ club being involved in club exchanges for a few carnivals (or those who are seriously keen) a whole season. At this stage it would look we may host a few members for a few carnivals during our 2010 season, and then some Burradoo members would be able to go to NZ for their season which would be late 2010. To host them, we would need places for them to stay, horses they could play (which means Burradoo members lending horses) and providing them with transport. More details as they come to hand…but if you any questions or ideas, please contact Alina or Belinda in the meantime.

2010 Australian Polocrosse Nationals

Congratulations to Bruce Greenslade on being selected in the NSW Masters Mixed team to play at Ballarat in the Nationals!! For those who want to go and support Bruce and watch some inspirational polocrosse, you can visit the Ballarat Nationals website, www.polox2010.com for further details on the carnival, accommodation, etc.

Pony Club Coaching

We are looking at hosting a pony club coaching day at Bong Bong on Sunday 25th October. If you are a coach and willing to help, please contact Allan Gilpin.

Uniform/ Merchandise

Perhaps looking for a Christmas present idea? Then how about some Quad Challenge merchandise?

Or perhaps you want to stock up on uniform before the beginning of the year the costs are as follows:

Club Shirts: $40.00

Set of numbers: $20.00

Saddlecloth: $40.00

Water-proof warm up jackets: $85.00

There is also a prototype jacket of red and yellow, similar to the old style for sale for $70. It is a large size- 110 cms.

Please contact Ann if you need anything.

Farewell

Audrey and Steve Stuart are saying farewell to their Mt Gibraltar home and hello coast! Audrey and Steve have decided to make the move down to Manyana on the South Coast. Audrey and Steve are both life members of the Club and have done a tremendous amount of work, not only for the Club, but the Zone and State over the years and there are many a-times we would have been lost without them. So on behalf of the Club, we wish you all the best of luck with the sea change and new house and look forward to hopefully seeing you at our carnival each year.

THE SEASON HAS NEARLY COME AND GONE

Where has the year gone? What seemed to be a long season has seemed to flash past. The Quad Challenge, whilst an exceptional amount of work, went off without any major disasters and we have earnt ourselves an excellent reputation of being capable of running a carnival of this magnitude.

Quad Challenge

I think for some of the members, we wondered if we would even make it to the Quad Challenge, but make it we did, and the event was a success! There are too many individuals who deserve to be named for all of their hard work, but for fear of potentially missing names, I am just going to say, THANK YOU TO ONE AND ALL FOR ALL OF YOUR HARD WORK AND EFFORT PUT INTO THE ORGANISING AND RUNNING OF THE QUAD CHALLENGE. There were so many facets of running this carnival that we had not experienced before, so I think we also learnt a lot as we went along. We should also note that 4 Southern Highland zone clubs put up their hands to assist us- so thank you to Braidwood, Lake George, Moss Vale and Yass Clubs. Unfortunately the weather was not kind to us on the Sunday, however the crowds still came and witnessed some amazing polocrosse matches. The first final was contested between South Africa and the United Kingdom, with South Africa running out winners 18 to 17. The next games were the club A Open and A Mixed finals. The last match was the final between Australia and New Zealand. Australia’s performance reflected what a well practised and highly skilled team they were, beating New Zealand 27 to 8.

If you would like to see photos, please visit the site of our official photographer, Ben Simpson (www.ogadesign.com.au) as he took some fantastic game and crowd shots.

Congratulations to Allan and Alina Gilpin as their horse, “Elmwood Oregon” won Champion Men’s ASH and Overall Champion ASH. Whilst speaking of horses, without the generosity of horse owners for lending their horses, the carnival would not have been able to go ahead. I hope those who did lend horses, enjoyed the experience of watching your horse play at that level.

It was fantastic to see so many old Burradoo members attend the carnival to catch up with each other. We hope to keep the reunions happening every few of years so we can keep in contact with these members.

2009 Season

We have had a number of successes over the 2009 season, with teams participating in finals and members winning individual awards. We have been represented by 4-5 senior teams most carnivals and a fantastic turnout of juniors and subbies who have provided many exciting games for the spectators on the sideline! Congratulations to our juniors and subbies for such great results this season. You should all be very proud!

Congratulations to the following members who have been selected to represent Southern Highlands at the NSW Zone Championships in Young on the 1 & 2 August:

Ann Anderson- Masters Mixed Team

For many years now the meeting has been conducted at “Wyeera”, an aboriginal word meaning “turning of the soil”.

In years past the meeting was held on Caulfield Cup Saturday and often attracted a greater attendance than the corresponding Sydney metropolitan meeting. It is interesting to note that the winner of the 1920 Bong Bong Cup, Purser, four years later went on to win the Caulfield Cup

By the 1980s Bong Bong was the largest picnic race meeting in the world. At a time when race crowds were declining Bong Bong’s were increasing reaching almost 35,000 in 1985. However poor behaviour on the part of some of this huge crowd resulted in the meetings being closed. In 1992 the races were revived but under strict crowd control by limiting attendance to members and their guests only.

Some firsts for the Club have been:

· first in Australia to be televised in both black and white and in colour,

· first Club in NSW to reintroduce hurdle and steeple races after WWII.

A proud possession of the Club is the actual 1898 Bong Bong Cup which was won by Mr Thomas Rutledge’s Record. The Cup is on display in the Club’s Bowral office. Record also finished second in the 1899 Cup as well as winning the Tirranna Cup at the Tirranna Picnic Races (near Goulburn).

Wyeera has developed into a fine facility over the years. Long gone are the days of 2 x 2 posts in lieu of proper running rails, ashes from a local brick works to fill some of the swampy parts and strand starting barriers. Gone too is the notorious “drop” just past the winning post where unsuspecting jockeys sometimes became airborne. These days the course is a professional looking track but one which still holds its picnic race atmosphere and charm with the famous hill in the centre of the course the source of many tales about what can happen out of sight of the stewards.

Pryde’s Pty Ltd was the first company in the Southern Hemisphere to manufacture a range of extruded pressure-cooked cereal grain based feeds for horses.

Pryde’s are strategically located at Gunnedah, a country town in the heart of the grain producing area of New South Wales, Australia, providing access to a wide variety of high quality grains and other ingredients to manufacture their horse feeds.

Peter Pryde, who founded Pryde’s in 1986, realised the benefits of extruded feeds when studying and training as a food technologist. He was convinced that cooking the starch and protein in grains would allow a much more efficient digestion process in the small intestine of the horse, overcoming many of the digestive and behavioural problems associated with feeding grain to horses.

Today Pryde’s operate under the Stockfeed Manufacturers Council guidelines and have adopted the FeedSafe™ Quality Assurance Program, which guarantees a clean fresh product every time it is manufactured.

Customer service remains the highest of priorities combined with the supply of quality nutrition products. Pryde’s manufacture, pack and dispatch products to order which helps ensure each batch of feed is freshly made when leaving the facility.

Pryde’s have an active product development program with a number of innovative new feeds in the pipeline that will meet the nutritional needs of a wide range of horses.

Pryde’s also utilise the feed analysis program Equi-Balance™, to assist horse owners and breeders in formulating balanced and complete feeds for all types of horses.

PRYDE’S IS A FAMILY OWNED COMPANY THAT HAS A COMMITMENT TO PRODUCING THE BEST QUALITY FEEDS AT COMPETITIVE PRICES.

For more information and product list visit Prydes at www.prydes.com.au
