2010 Season

It’s hard to believe that we have nearly finished the SH carnivals for the 2010 season. Another year has flashed past. We have been blessed with generally warm weather at each carnival, with the exception of the wet at Hall. We have also had some very successful wins, both teams and individuals, so we should be very proud of our Club. Special mention should be made to all of new players! Your enthusiasm and success is quite infectious! You should all be very proud of your achievements, just as we are. I hope everyone has enjoyed the season so far.

Burradoo carnival

Our carnival thankfully came and went without too much hassle (well for those not on the Committee anyway). We were very lucky to get great mild weather, and even though we had large numbers of teams competing, still managed to finish with some daylight left on Saturday. A massive thank you to all who did put time and effort into making the carnival run smoothly yet again. Those who work are often not publicly acknowledged enough and it is assumed we all do it for the love of it, although in the lead up and during the actual event I am sure we all wonder how much we do love it… until the Monday after and we wonder what all the fuss was about. Congratulations to all of our teams and individuals who won prizes. The results for the carnival were:

During the Presentation, long time club member Mrs Carol Gilpin was given a painting done by local artist Elva Macpherson, of Carol riding the famous “Mardi Gras” which partnered Carol at Zone and National Titles and also appearing in Royal Sydney Show Teams. This presentation represented the Club’s appreciation and recognition of Carol’s dedication, support and love of the club.

New Zealand Visitors

We were very lucky to have Talie and “Baz” Burtt and Cameron McKenzie come over from New Zealand and play with us at Milton and Braidwood carnivals. Our Kiwi friends were kindly put up by Allan and Alina, Neville and the Edwards family and when they weren’t mucking around with horses, ensured they made the most of visiting our country by doing some day trips. Thank you to all of those who lent horses, supplied gear and helped transport the horses. Although no major wins were recorded, I am sure they had a great time and the experience made up for not winning. All those at Milton will keep the memory of doing the haka around the campfire alive!

We hope that in the future some of our members will be able to go over and visit them and get to experience polocrosse in New Zealand during their 2010 or 2011 season. Start thinking about planning your holidays!

SH Zone Carnival

The SH zone carnival has been changed to 26/27 June at Hall grounds. Burradoo has the jobs of helping clean and maintain the showers and toilets in conjunction with Braidwood club.

2011 NSW Zone Championships

We have been awarded the running of the 2011 NSW Zone Championships which will be run in August 2011. This will require a big effort from everyone, so please get your thinking caps on how we can make this carnival just as successful as the International Quad Challenge. We developed a fantastic reputation after running the Quads, so let’s maintain it! Things to start considering- sponsorship!! A carnival can’t be a successful without good backing from companies through either donated items, prizes or funds, so if you know of somewhere we should initiate contact with, please contact Fiona, Alina or Ann

End of Year get-together planning

We have started thinking about what we can do to celebrate the end of the season. At this stage, there are 2 ideas we would like to get your thoughts on:

1) A trail ride around the Breadalbane area, with the night spent at a woolshed playing “games” and trivia

2) Afternoon/evening at a local hall, playing tennis in the afternoon, trivia and “games” in the evening.

If you can please let Claire Kilby (Claire.Kilby@anz.com) know your thoughts on either option so we can ensure the best get-together for the club.

Bits and Pieces

· Speedy recovery wishes to Tim Bendesy who unfortunately managed to break his collarbone in 2 places playing football at school. We also hope that Taylor Hooton, who had knee surgery, also has a speedy recovery.

· Congratulations to Lou Kilby who has finally finished University (with a collective sigh from her family members I hear!). Well done Lou!

· Well done to Emily and Veronica Dickson who represented Burradoo at the Club Champs in Bingara.

· Condoloscences to the families of Dr John Walsh and Cecil Krebs. Dr Walsh was a Patron of the Club and a most generous benefactor. Cecil was a playing member in the 1960’s-1970’s.

· WANTED- 14-15hh very quiet horse wanted for 9 yr old child for Pony Club, farm work, etc. Knowledgeable family already involved with horses. Please contact Wendy, 0418 325 355

· Lost- the Club’s calico bag that was used at the Jemmy Moss for the meat tray raffles. Also lost- a towel (used as a saddlecloth) was left down near the field at the first practice of the year. If you know the whereabouts of either, please let Belinda know.

There will be a working bee on the Friday before the carnival. Please try and be there whenever you can. It will start around 10am.

Australian National Championships, Ballarat

Congratulations to Bruce Greenslade and Belinda Tarlinton, both of whom had very successful campaigns at Ballarat.

Bruce’s team were runner’s up in the Mixed Masters competition, going down to QLD 20 to 17. Bruce and “Grace” were awarded Best # 3 in the Mixed Masters.

Belinda’s team won their Senior Mixed final against QLD in extra time, 23 to 22. Belinda and “Surprise Package” were awarded Champion Horse of the Senior Mixed.

There was some fantastic polocrosse played over the week, with some thrills and spills… none bigger than our Club Secretary Ann Anderson unwittingly playing “show jump” with a runaway horse, and coming off second best, being knocked out cold for a small while. Thankfully Ann only spent 4 hours in hospital, no doubt after they got sick of listening to “I’m fine, I have arnica in the truck, I am missing games!”

NSW should be congratulated with being in all 10 finals and winning 6 of them

New Zealand trip

Congratulations to Sam Shields on her NSW representation on a tour of New Zealand. Unfortunately, Sam’s team didn’t have any wins, but the memories and experience more than made up for it.

DO NOT BRING HORSES WITH RINGWORM TO CARNIVALS

The NSWPA Board has issued the following notice to all members.

“If a horse has or has had a infectious disease a Vet’s clearance certificate must supplied before the horse can participate in Polocrosse activities.

This is an addendum to Rule 2 C Page 35 in the Rule Book.”

Imaverol

This treatment costs $70 for 100ml or thereabouts. Makes five litres but seems to stop spread in its tracks.

Please note in particular

6. Horses’ tails shall be plaited, and be fastened in a manner such, as to ensure they do not come undone during play. No tape to be used.

This is an endemic disease but if you suspect your horse may have it you should contact your vet as it is notifiable to DPI.

There is a vaccine available from local stock suppliers.

This will not cover all strains of the disease but may help prevent your horse getting the disease.

If your horse has never been vaccinated you will need to do the start up vaccination program.

You can administer the vaccine your self, a vet is not required.

STRANGLES

Strangles: This is a highly infectious bacterial disease of the upper respiratory tract of horses. Outbreaks of the disease may be expected in groups of horses where there is a changing population. Animals taking part in events, competitions and pony club activities may also be exposed. Cold weather and poor ventilation assist the spread of the disease.

Although common in young animals, it can occur at any age. The disease is characterised by cold-like symptoms with fever, nasal discharge, depression and reluctance to eat. Hot, tender, swellings develop in glands, usually around the head, jaw and neck, as a result of abscess formation. These often rupture and discharge a thick creamy-yellow pus. Most horses recover but the infection can cause death or chronic illness.

Vaccination, involving an initial course of 3 injections and then yearly boosters, will assist in the control of strangles. Discuss vaccination of your horse with your vet when planning to visit shows, or horse competitions or if moving the horse to a new agistment property.

And so the “off” season begins…

I hope everyone is enjoying the beginning of the “off” season, although it generally just means the seasoned horses look like wild ponies you wouldn’t pay $100 for, while they grow out manes and slowly try to grow back clipped bodies, and the young ones come in for the next step in their education. I think being involved with horses and polocrosse is a long cycle that just never ends! And before we know it (and to scare you all a little!) the 2010 season will be just around the corner…

­­­­­­­­­­­­­Upcoming Events

• AGM: The AGM has been booked in for Friday 25^th September at the Moss Vale Services Club. Dinner for those who are interested will be at 6.00pm in the main bistro and the meeting will commence at 7.30pm. This is your opportunity to take on a position within the executive and committee of the Club so that it runs the way you want it to. There will be a number of positions that will become vacant for the 2010 season so check out the AGM notice to see what you would like to be involved in. Please note that the meeting is a “dry” meeting meaning that you are welcome to bring a drink/s in with you when the meeting starts, but you will be unable to get another until the meeting finishes. Please respect this.
• Presentation/Fun Day: Sunday 15^th November has been booked for the presentation/fun day. This year for something a little different we have booked Sylvan Glen in Penrose. Here we will be able to play tennis and golf for those who are keen for some social exercise. The day will start at 10pm (for those who want to play golf), followed by lunch and the presentation and conclude at 3pm. Further details will follow soon.
• Trophies: For those who were awarded trophies for the 2008 season, please clean your trophies and return to Ann ASAP as they will need to be engraved with the 2009 winners prior to the presentation day. Ann can be contacted on 02 48410 400 to discuss delivery of these trophies.

New Zealand Club Exchange

A very exciting possibility has come our way… Alina Gilpin has been corresponding with a gentleman from a New Zealand polocrosse club about the chances of Burradoo members and this NZ club being involved in club exchanges for a few carnivals (or those who are seriously keen) a whole season. At this stage it would look we may host a few members for a few carnivals during our 2010 season, and then some Burradoo members would be able to go to NZ for their season which would be late 2010. To host them, we would need places for them to stay, horses they could play (which means Burradoo members lending horses) and providing them with transport. More details as they come to hand…but if you any questions or ideas, please contact Alina or Belinda in the meantime.

2010 Australian Polocrosse Nationals

Congratulations to Bruce Greenslade on being selected in the NSW Masters Mixed team to play at Ballarat in the Nationals!! Farewell

Audrey and Steve Stuart are saying farewell to their Mt Gibraltar home and hello coast! Audrey and Steve have decided to make the move down to Manyana on the South Coast. Audrey and Steve are both life members of the Club and have done a tremendous amount of work, not only for the Club, but the Zone and State over the years and there are many a-times we would have been lost without them. So on behalf of the Club, we wish you all the best of luck with the sea change and new house and look forward to hopefully seeing you at our carnival each year.

THE SEASON HAS NEARLY COME AND GONE

Where has the year gone? What seemed to be a long season has seemed to flash past. The Quad Challenge, whilst an exceptional amount of work, went off without any major disasters and we have earnt ourselves an excellent reputation of being capable of running a carnival of this magnitude.

Quad Challenge

I think for some of the members, we wondered if we would even make it to the Quad Challenge, but make it we did, and the event was a success! There are too many individuals who deserve to be named for all of their hard work, but for fear of potentially missing names, I am just going to say, THANK YOU TO ONE AND ALL FOR ALL OF YOUR HARD WORK AND EFFORT PUT INTO THE ORGANISING AND RUNNING OF THE QUAD CHALLENGE. There were so many facets of running this carnival that we had not experienced before, so I think we also learnt a lot as we went along.  We should also note that 4 Southern Highland zone clubs put up their hands to assist us- so thank you to Braidwood, Lake George, Moss Vale and Yass Clubs. Unfortunately the weather was not kind to us on the Sunday, however the crowds still came and witnessed some amazing polocrosse matches. The first final was contested between South Africa and the United Kingdom, with South Africa running out winners 18 to 17. The next games were the club A Open and A Mixed finals. The last match was the final between Australia and New Zealand. Australia’s performance reflected what a well practised and highly skilled team they were, beating New Zealand 27 to 8.

Congratulations to Allan and Alina Gilpin as their horse, “Elmwood Oregon” won Champion Men’s ASH and Overall Champion ASH. Whilst speaking of horses, without the generosity of horse owners for lending their horses, the carnival would not have been able to go ahead. I hope those who did lend horses, enjoyed the experience of watching your horse play at that level.

It was fantastic to see so many old Burradoo members attend the carnival to catch up with each other. We hope to keep the reunions happening every few of years so we can keep in contact with these members.

2009 Season

We have had a number of successes over the 2009 season, with teams participating in finals and members winning individual awards. We have been represented by 4-5 senior teams most carnivals and a fantastic turnout of juniors and subbies who have provided many exciting games for the spectators on the sideline! Congratulations to our juniors and subbies for such great results this season. You should all be very proud!

It’s fantastic to see so many Burradoo members representing!

Congratulations also to Kylie Goatham, Sam Shields, Bruce Greenslade, Rod Edwards and Belinda Tarlinton who are all on the NSW squads  for selection at the 2010 Australian National Championships to be held in Ballarat. The teams will be announced at the completion of the NSW Zone Championships at Young. Good luck!

Shower Block

The shower block has been completed and used at the Quad Challenge and the SH zone carnival. There have been many compliments received about them. A big thank you to Paul Adams, Paul Brackenreg, Adam Dickson, Andrew Dickson, Andrew Blenkinsopp, Tony Christian, Brian Martin, Gary Lidgard, Neville Gilpin and Bill Heuston for all your hard work in completing this project. Don’t think anyone will be able to complain about Burradoo showers ever again!

Pony Club Coaching

• Bruce, Janis and Vanessa Greenslade, Damian and Ben Baxter, and Ann Anderson made the trip to Worrigee to coach at the Berry Pony Club on the 25^th July. A big thank you to them. I hear the day went well.
• We are looking at hosting a pony club coaching day at Bong Bong on Sunday 25^th October. If you are a coach and willing to help, please contact Allan Gilpin.
• Bruce also travelled to Forest Hills Pony Club a few months ago to coach their members. Thanks Bruce.

Uniform

For those who are looking for Club Uniform, the costs are as follows:

• Water-proof warm up jackets: $85.00

There is also a prototype jacket of red and yellow, similar to the old style for sale for $70. It is a large size- 110 cms.

Some items from the State

-          Anyone who brings a dog or swaps horses during the course of a carnival will be banned for 2 weeks. Please refer to rule 3A and 3B in the rule book for the explanations.

-          Any player, who has a young horse to play as well as a “going” horse, must be nominated into the spare player’s pool.

-          Reminder that split reins must not be used- playing or umpiring. The reins should also not be longer than 1.6 metres.

-          Nominations close 3 August for anyone interested in being the Manager or Coach of the 2011 Australian team for the World Cup in England.

-          Jo Langford, WA Secretary was awarded PAA Administrator of the Year.

-          Gill Mathie has been announced the PAA President.

Bits and Pieces

• CONGRATULATIONS to Natasha and Andrew Blenkinsopp on the safe arrival of Jake Michael Blenkinsopp on the 15^th March.
• Our condole scenes to Brian Martin and his family on the loss of Brian’s father.
• Congratulations to Louise Kilby who has recently returned from representing Australia in the U23 Coxless Four  rowing which was held in the Czech Republic in July. Lou’s team came 3^rd. Fantastic effort!  Lou had to move to Melbourne earlier this year to train with her team; hence we haven’t seen her on the polocrosse field this year. However Lou is looking forward to being back on the field in 2010.
• Get well to Glen Dorahy who had a nasty spill at Hall carnival.
• Our best wishes to Bernadette Brown who is currently battling health issues, but reportedly has been given a clear report recently.
• Condolences to the friends and family of Claudia York who passed away recently.
• Riley Edwards broke his arm earlier in the season but has recovered well.
• Andrew Blenkinsopp underwent surgery in June, but has recovered well.
• Bon Voyage to Taneale Murray who is travelling to Germany in September!
• Our thoughts to the family of David Absolon, who recently passed away. David was a strong player and regular supporter of our carnivals over the past few years.
• Keep an eye out for the end of year presentation and AGM dates which will be out later.
• Damien Baxter has joined the farrier world, so if you are looking for a farrier, contact Damien on 0415 157 649. Also, congratulations to Damien and Vanessa on their engagement, and also for winning the prize of a weekend away at the Crowne Plaza in Sydney for their dedication as horse-carers at the Quad challenge.
• Back in February Bruce Greenslade and Rod Edwards travelled to Ballarat to participate in the Masters Games where they had a successful carnival.
• Margie Englebach was disappointed that she and Lisa missed our carnival. However in any of the older members are passing near Minmi, Margie would love to see you! Please contact Ann for Margie’s contact details.
• Bill Heuston is hoping to hold a Golf Fun Day later on in the year. Keep an eye out for details soon!

The Society was established in 1971 in Scone (New South Wales) which promotes itself as ‘the Horse Capital of Australia’. Today the Society is the largest of more than 70 individual horse breed associations in Australia. We enjoy a loyal and growing membership of more than 9,500 individuals and have in excess of 170,000 registered horses.

The Society has 66 Branches throughout Australia. Our Branches conduct competitions and activities for Members in their area and assist in promoting the breed within the horse industry. The successful performance of the Australian Stock Horse has not only been recognised throughout Australia, but exports to United Kingdom, United States of America, Africa, New Zealand and Asia have given them worldwide recognition. The Society conducts a National Championships on an annual basis to emphasise, highlight and record the success of the breed in the competition area.

The Society aims to preserve and promote the bloodlines of the Australian Stock Horse, recognised for its versatility and superior performance amongst work and leisure breeds. Our Board of Directors endeavours to ensure that the history and identity of the Australian Stock Horse remains clearly identified and for the Australian Stock Horse to continue for many years to come.
